Why Choose Pediatric Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Monroe Carell
- Highest-level NICU
The NICU at Monroe Carell is rated Level IV by the American Academy of Pediatrics. This is the highest possible classification. It means your baby will not be transported to another hospital, no matter how serious or complex their condition. Vanderbilt has specialists in medical and surgical care and pediatric anesthesiology who only treat children. This includes the smallest babies born before term.
- Experienced care
You have access to top doctors and leading-edge treatments at Monroe Carell, as well as our unique team approach to care. Plastic Surgery has been a core service at Vanderbilt for nearly 100 years, and one of the most well-developed programs in the nation. We focus our skills and compassion on delivering the best possible care and family experience.
- Trauma care
Our team is equipped to handle many conditions, including facial trauma, head injuries, burns and other complex wounds. Our surgeons have advanced training and expertise in reconstructive microsurgery. We work closely with our orthopaedic trauma and cancer surgeons before, during and after surgery.
- Facial reconstruction
Our facial reconstructive and reanimation services can help normal growth and development of the skull and face. Our pediatric craniofacial surgeons specialize in repair and reconstruction of broken facial or skull bones and cuts, no matter the size or complexity. We specialize in caring for children with facial weakness, paralysis, and asymmetry.
- Burn reconstruction
Our burn reconstruction services, using laser treatment and surgery, offers the most advanced treatments and rehabilitative care for pediatric burn injuries.
- Pioneering surgery
Vanderbilt pioneered in utero repair of myelomeningocele, a type of spina bifida, in 1997. A seven-year National Institutes of Health-funded trial, Management of Myelomeningocele Study (MOMS), showed a clear benefit for babies who undergo fetal surgery to treat spina bifida.
- Recognized care
We are nationally accredited by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA). This means we meet that organization’s highest standards for medical care. Our program follows national regulations for treatment of cleft palate and craniofacial problems.
