Why Choose the Liver Transplant Program at Monroe Carell
- Advanced procedures
As part of an academic medical center, our team offers innovative procedures not available at other medical centers. This includes specialized split liver transplant procedures and dual organ transplants, such as liver/heart and liver/kidney. We also specialized in liver transplantation in babies under 20 pounds.
- Knowledge and experience
The Vanderbilt Transplant Center is one of the largest and most experienced in the Southeast, providing lifesaving care to our smallest patients. Our specialists completed 49 pediatric transplants in fiscal year 2024. We have the expertise and advanced training to perform even the most complex transplant procedures with excellent outcomes. Our support staff is transplant certified where applicable.
- Recognized care
Vanderbilt is a UNOS-recognized Liver Transplant Program. UNOS is the nonprofit organization that matches organ donors with recipients.
- Follow-up care
Children who receive a transplant at Monroe Carell receive follow-up care throughout their lives. Studies show that patients have fewer complications and better outcomes when families work closely with a post-transplant medical team. We also use mobile phone apps and telehealth visits for all patients with the available technologies.
- Living donor program
We offer a living donor liver transplant program to reduce wait times for a healthy liver. Part of a liver from a living donor also gives patients a better chance of a longer, healthier life.
- Clinical trials
Because we are part of an academic medical center, we offer access to some of the most promising new treatments and therapies being tested in clinical trials. Participating in a clinical trial is always optional. Find a clinical trial.
- Coordinated pharmacy services
Our transplant pharmacists offer the highest level of care and expertise for transplant patients. Each transplant pharmacist works directly with doctors and staff to monitor patients' care plans.
- Family and patient support services
Our support team will guide you through the transplant process. Our team will help connect you with community resources that can assist with lodging and other needs while your child is in our care. We offer ongoing transplant support and education via My Health at Vanderbilt and online meetings.
