The Spasticity Clinic at Monroe Carell is designed for children with increased muscle tightness and other spasticity symptoms. Spasticity management is complex. It’s important that you seek comprehensive care from an expert team that understands the long-term effects of spasticity on your child and family.

Our team includes experts in all established methods of spasticity treatment and pioneers in new treatment techniques. Our goal is to provide care that will optimize your child’s physical abilities. We provide ongoing support that includes follow-up visits with our team members. Our hope is to enable your child to reach his or her fullest potential.

    In one visit you will see several pediatric board-certified specialists. Your visit may include time with a physiatrist, neurologist, developmental pediatrician, physical therapist, neurosurgeon and orthopaedic surgeon. Our specialists provide personalized care for your child’s unique movement problems. Together, we determine the best treatment options. We schedule multiple sessions this way to save you time and trips to our clinic.

    Unique care

    We are the only multidisciplinary movement disorder clinic in Tennessee. Ours is the only children’s hospital in Tennessee that offers selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) for children with spasticity. We also offer baclofen pump surgery and ongoing management.

Mollie's Story

At age 2, Mollie was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. After trying several treatment options, selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery helped Mollie walk better than before and become more independent. Ours is the only children's hospital in Tennessee that offers this surgery for children with spasticity.
