Several programs offer help and advice about your child, and will explain the services they offer. Consider contacting them before your appointment.
- If your child is under 34 months, contact the Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS), (800) 852-7157.
- If your child is 34 months or older, contact your county school system. Ask to have your child tested for preschool special education.
- The Regional Intervention Program offers parents help with children’s challenging behavior.
- For help with finding therapists, such as speech therapists, call your pediatrician and insurance company.
If you need help getting started with any of the above, contact the Vanderbilt Autism Resource Line: (877) 273-8862 or email autismresources@vumc.org.
During your visit, you will meet with a psychologist and another staff member. We will speak with you about your concerns and ask you to complete some forms. We will do play-based tests with your child to determine problem solving, social, play, and communication skills. You will remain with your during this time.
How to prepare for your visit
Your visit will last two to four hours. Have your child eat breakfast or lunch before you arrive. Bring snacks, diapers and wipes (if needed), and your completed Parent Paperwork packet.
If possible, please leave other children with another caregiver. You can also bring someone to watch them in the waiting room. Because our tests use many toys, it can be hard for siblings to watch without participating during the visit.
